Different Eras of SSL. One Classic Bus Compressor.

Very few pieces of studio equipment achieve truly iconic status. Fewer still become so closely associated with the sound of a finished record. The Solid State Logic Bus Compressor is one of them. For more than five decades, its unmistakable sound has made it one of the most trusted and influential dynamics processors in professional audio. Only SSL could bring it back with this depth of authenticity. Reconnecting with the essentials of the legendary SSL Bus Compressor, Bus Comp Classic returns in a dedicated 1U format, remaining faithful to the sound and focused workflow of the original while extending its creative range through Variable VCA Drive, expanded ratios and time constants, and a genuine stereo external side-chain input.

What makes a compressor become a studio legend?

Join Andy Jackson and Chris Jenkins as they sit down with acclaimed engineers and producers to explore the enduring appeal of the SSL Bus Compressor and the thinking behind the new Bus Comp Classic. Through candid discussion, real-world experiences and insights from behind the console, the panel reflects on how the SSL Bus Compressor has shaped countless records, why its workflow remains so compelling, and what makes Bus Comp Classic such a faithful return to the original concept.

High-Performance THAT 2181 VCAs

At the heart of Bus Comp Classic are high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs in the audio path, paired with the unique SSL sidechain architecture that incorporates a VCA in its feedback loop. Together, they create the distinctive response that has made the SSL Bus Compressor a studio staple, combining punch, movement and cohesion with exceptional musicality. From subtle gain reduction to assertive bus processing, transients remain defined yet controlled, while multiple elements begin to move and breathe together.

Engineered without compromise, Bus Comp Classic offers a faithful return to the response and feel of the classic SSL Bus Compressor, with the precision, consistency and reliability expected from modern SSL analogue hardware.

Variable VCA Drive

New Variable VCA Drive extends Bus Comp Classic far beyond a single sonic signature, placing decades of SSL console character under one continuously variable control. With VCA Drive at its cleanest setting, the VCAs operate in a balanced configuration for the low-distortion clarity and powerful transient response from the 9000 Series and Duality consoles which are developed on SSL’s SuperAnalogueTM technology platform.

As soon as the control is activated, the VCAs operate in an unbalanced configuration, recreating the harmonic behaviour and character of classic SSL designs such as the FX384 and 4000 Series consoles. Increasing the control further progressively introduces additional colour and saturation, moving from subtle console-style richness through to the denser, more aggressive character associated with early 4K designs.

From polished mix finishing to heavily driven drums and parallel compression approaching 10% THD, Variable VCA Drive lets you decide how clean, coloured or confrontational the compressor becomes.

    Classic Control. More Musicality

Bus Comp Classic retains the SSL Attack, Release, and Ratio settings that have become central to professional bus compression, presented as precision six-position stepped controls for fast operation, accurate recall and repeatable results. Additional Ratio and Release settings extend the compressor's creative range, offering greater control and flexibility while preserving the speed and immediacy of the classic SSL workflow.

Each compression ratio has its own carefully defined behaviour. The renowned 2:1 mode features an exceptionally gentle soft-knee response, allowing gain reduction to develop progressively for transparent mix bus processing. Higher ratios deliver increasingly assertive control and greater density, making them equally effective on stems, drum busses and parallel chains.

More than simply another release setting, SSL Auto Release has a character of its own. Its programme-dependent, two-stage release circuitry responds dynamically to changing material, releasing louder elements of the program material more quickly, while allowing quieter material to recover more gradually. The result is a natural, musical release character that retains movement, detail and control, making ‘Auto’ particularly effective on complex program material.

    Built for Record-Making

From classic stereo mix and music bus compression to creative parallel processing chains, Bus Comp Classic adapts effortlessly to the way records are made. Use it to bring lead and backing elements together into a cohesive arrangement, shape the movement of an instrument bus, add urgency to drums, or apply the final touch that makes a mix feel complete. Its focused workflow makes it an immediate creative tool for artists and producers, while providing the precision and repeatability engineers depend on for professional mixing.

    Modern Side-Chain Control

A precision six-position Side-Chain High Pass Filter gives you greater control over the compressor’s response to low-frequency material. By reducing the influence of bass-heavy elements on the detector circuit, kick drums and bass can retain their depth and impact without driving excessive gain reduction across the rest of the mix. The genuine stereo external side-chain input supports both creative processing and advanced delivery workflows. When printing individual stems, the complete mix can feed the side-chain while each stem passes separately through the audio path. Every stem therefore receives the gain-reduction behaviour it experienced within the full mix, helping preserve the balance and movement of the approved production across alternate versions and deliverables.
