Live Sound
20/01/25

Tulsa, Oklahoma, 20th January 2025 — A Solid State Logic customer since 2018, Victory Church recently upgraded all three Solid State Logic Live consoles at its main location in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Duke DeJong of Vantage Pro AV, headquartered in California, supplied the equipment and provided support during the upgrades.

Earlier in 2024, the church installed new SSL Live L450 consoles in its 4,500-seat Main Auditorium, networked over MADI with each other and connected to five ML 32.24 SuperAnalogue™ Stageboxes through SSL’s Blacklight II Concentrator, which includes optional shared mic gain compensation. Additionally, the technical team upgraded the SSL desk in the Next Gen Auditorium with a Plus Processing Pack, upgrading it to an L200 Plus. The L200 Plus is connected to a pair of ML 32.24 SuperAnalogue™ Stageboxes, and all three consoles are interconnected via a Dante network.

Founding Pastor Sharon Daugherty and her late husband, Pastor Billy Joe Daugherty, established Victory Church in 1981. They also established Victory Christian School, Victory Bible College, Victory World Missions Training Center and the Tulsa Dream Center in Tulsa, which provides food, clothing, medical, educational and recreational services to the community.

The unmistakable SSL sound

“The main thing that we like about SSL consoles is just the quality of how they sound, especially with our brand-new L-Acoustics P.A.,” says Job Rangel, AVL tech at Victory Church and one of the front-of-house engineer in the Main Auditorium. “The combination of SSL and L-Acoustics is amazing — it's the best that I've heard.” The L450 at FOH also generates a feed for the church’s broadcasts, elevating the quality of this audio too.

Rangel recalls his first-time experience with an SSL Live console at the church, where he has worked in live production for three years, including mixing monitors in the Main Auditorium: “It was very impressive, especially all of the functionality of the board and how the room sounded and responded. The SSL Live makes my job a whole lot easier because of its sonic quality and workflow” The church’s engineers have all the channel processing and effects plug-ins they need in the L450. “I personally love the Blitzer; that's one of my favourite plug-ins to use,” he says of SSL’s versatile and characterful compressor, inspired by the performance of outboard hardware devices of various types, including 76’s and 2A’s.

Intelligent, user-friendly workflow

Rangel has used other mixing console models from a variety of brands, he says. “But, by far, SSL has been the simplest and most user-friendly. I can navigate to find whatever I need to find. I can get to just about anything super-fast, especially using the keypad or shortcuts.”

Victory Church’s services feature a contemporary band with an emphasis on the vocalists, whose numbers can swell to form a sizeable choir. With the SSL Live at FOH, Rangel, who typically manages over 50 inputs, says, “I don’t really have to do much, because it has made our vocalists sound so much clearer, without me having to use a lot of the low-end and mid EQ.”

As for the layout of the L450, which offers three 12-fader tiles below, with a display and Master Tile above, he says, “I particularly like to use my VCA groups in the middle tile. Then, I keep my vocals on my left side and my band on my right. I absolutely love the layout of the console.” The upper section also provides space for a tablet, providing the engineer additional touchscreen control over channel processing and effects rack processing using SSL’s TaCo.

L450 at monitors

The second L450 in the Main Auditorium is at monitors, where the engineer is kept busy providing individual feeds to everyone on stage. “Everybody on stage is on in-ears, although we do have some stage wedges for the speakers so that they can hear themselves,” says Rangel.

An L200 Plus had previously been installed in the Next Gen Auditorium, located in the main building alongside the larger auditorium. As part of the recent upgrades, it has been expanded with a Plus Processing Pack, adding greater processing power and enabling it to support a wider variety of applications. The L200 Plus now manages both FOH and monitor duties for the auditorium, which hosts the church’s young adult services and events, utilising an installed d&b audiotechnik P.A. system.
